“That was awkward,” Alex said.

“To say the least,” I agreed. “So Bonnie was planning a divorce. Marc and Linda both looked shocked, but I wonder if that was an act? I wouldn’t have thought anything about Linda being at the house so early, if we didn’t know she and Marc were—I don’t know? Seeing each other? In love with each other? I’m not sure what term to use.”

“Yeah, I agree. In any other circumstance, it would just look like a friend comforting a friend.” Alex pulled out onto the snowy street. “And now that we know Bonnie filed divorce papers a couple days ago, this could be a game changer. I want to go see what Talia will tell us about Vincent Fang. I have a hard time believing anything she said last night.”

I nodded. “She said she didn’t know who Bonnie borrowed the money from, but Vincent said Talia was giving him the money for Bonnie.”

“I get she was probably trying to protect Bonnie’s reputation, but in a murder investigation, all that is off the table. We need the truth. No matter how sordid.”

“Agreed. I assume Marc will inherit everything since the divorce didn’t go through,” I said. “One theory for Marc killing Bonnie would be he didn’t have to split everything in a divorce. I don’t know how much Bonnie is worth, especially knowing she owed a loan shark money. But if Marc really didn’t know that, and he assumed everything was normal on the home front as far as finances go, maybe he figures killing Bonnie would be easier than divorcing her.”

Alex nodded. “I can see that. I can also get behind the theory Linda was tired of playing second fiddle. Linda’s surprise could have been genuine just now. She gets tired of waiting in the wings for the divorce she never thought would happen, kills Bonnie, only to discover Bonnie was planning a divorce all along.”

“Talk about jumping the shark,” I said. “If Linda is the killer, all she had to do was wait one more day.”

“Oh, the irony.”

I snorted. “You said it.”

We drove in silence the rest of the way to Talia Morten’s house. I couldn’t stop thinking about Maggie Castings and what Bonnie had said to her last night during their fight. What big secret was Maggie Castings hiding that Bonnie knew about? And was it big enough Maggie would kill so it could remain a secret?
